The Bali International Program On Asian Studies (BIPAS)

BIPAS is an interdisciplinary study abroad program taught in English at Udayana University in Bali, introducing you to Indonesian language and culture, international business, marketing, tourism, law and environmental management. You’ll also learn about modern Indonesia, gain insight into South-East Asia and discover fascinating Balinese traditions.

Courses in the BIPAS program
You can pick 3 – 7 courses per semester. The course Indonesian Language is included in this and is mandatory for everyone. You can choose both Bachelor’s and Master’s level courses regardless of whether you are a Bachelor’s or Master’s level student.

The Indonesian Language course is offered at two different scopes: 6 ECTS and 3 ECTS. The 6 ECTS course has two classes per week and the 3 ECTS course one class per week.

Making your course selections

Course selections are made after the application deadline by submitting an electronic course selection form. The course selections are binding and cannot be changed unless you have failed to enroll in a certain course that your home university requires, and you can provide written proof of this requirement. We will send your course selections to Udayana University approximately 1 month after the application deadline. All your course selections are confirmed unless there’s an overlap in course schedules, in which case we will notify you about it. Dropping out of a course is possible until the second week of the semester as long as you still have a minimum of 4 courses left.

Course requirements

You are required to complete all your chosen courses. There is a 75 % obligatory attendance. Failure to adhere to this requirement may lead to failing the course. Indonesian Language course is mandatory and must be acceptably completed.

Workshops and excursions

BIPAS program also include various cultural workshops and excursions. Workshop topics include traditional Balinese costumes, Palm leaf ornaments, Traditional healing, and Balinese cooking. Excursions are organized to Balinese compounds and temples. A few of the workshops and excursions are mandatory and the rest are optional.

Course and semester dates

Semesters last 4 months. The autumn semester runs from September to December and the spring semester from January to May. The semester starts with a traditional Balinese welcome ceremony and orientation days where Asia Exchange is also present. The orientation week is ending with a Semester Kick-Off Party. The teaching and lectures take place on the Jimbaran campus of Udayana University. Some workshops and, e.g., the orientation take place on the Denpasar campus. Lectures and teaching happen from Monday to Wednesday. Workshops usually take place on Wednesdays after lectures or on Thursdays and excursions take place either on Thursdays or Fridays. You can apply all year round. Please apply before the application deadline for the semester of your choice.

CREDITS & GRADING

Credits are granted in ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) points and can easily be transferred to your degree. Each course is worth 5 ECTS credits, except for the course Indonesian Language (3–6 ECTS, depending on scope).

WHO CAN APPLY

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • A high school diploma or similar certificate
  • To follow the instruction, you should have sufficient English skills. No language test is required.

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • An official transcript of recordsof all your semesters. The format may vary from university to university.
  • Udayana University’s forms
  • A scanned copy of the identification page of your passport. Please note that your passport needs to be valid for 12 months after the semester (one-semester students) or 18 months after the end of the semester (two-semester students). If your passport expires earlier, please apply for a new passport early. Please note that applications sent without a valid passport are not processed at all.
  • An official passport photo in colour and the size of 4×3 cm. The picture should be taken without glasses and both ears must be visible. The picture should be in JPG format. See example.
